GIRLS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Edison Gets Five Goals in Second Half to Win, 6-0

Lynne Thiel and Jennine Martin each scored two goals as the Edison High School girls’ soccer team defeated Huntington Beach, 6-0, in a Sunset League game Thursday.

Erin Bailey and Jennifer Martin also scored for Edison (16-3-6, 8-1-1 in league), which got five of its goals in the second half.

In another Sunset League game:

Marina 2, Westminster 0--Sarah Heilman scored both goals for visiting Marina (18-0-3, 9-0-1). Marina had 36 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Cristin Rossman had eight saves for Marina and did not allow a goal in league play. Marina goalies allowed only one goal in league play.

In the Century League:

Foothill 3, Orange 0--Cathy Shortall scored twice and Kari Maeda scored once for host Foothill (12-6-5, 7-0-3), which won the league title. Julie Ehret had two saves for her 13th shutout for Foothill and Rebecca Comstock had 16 saves for Orange.

El Modena 1, Canyon 1--Molly Schulman scored 12 minutes into the game for host El Modena (8-8-4, 4-3-3), which finished third in league. Danielle Watson scored in the 38th minute for Canyon (15-3-5, 7-1-2), which finished second in league behind Foothill as a result of the tie. Kay Hendrickson had five saves and Watson had four saves for Canyon. Amy Moreno had four saves for El Modena.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 4, Cypress 0--Los Alamitos (18-3-3, 8-0-2) finished first in league with the victory. Senior Julie Harris scored twice and seniors Karen Kolodziej and Jenny Reyes each scored once for Los Alamitos. Sophomore Kathy Skoglund had two saves to break the school record with 16 shutouts. Mara Bloom had 15 shutouts in the 1985-86 season.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 2, Buena Park 1--Cathy Collier scored 10 minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie for host Sonora (6-8-3, 3-5-2). Carina Garcia scored with about 10 minutes left in the first half to give Buena Park a 1-0 lead. Casie Lozano scored three minutes into the second half to tie the score.

La Habra 1, Sunny Hills 0--Stacy Chung scored five minutes into the game on a header off of a throw-in pass. The two teams tied for the league title with 7-2-1 records. Shannan Brown had three saves for visiting Sunny Hills (17-2-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 1--Cheryl Jones scored twice and Stefanie Stucker scored once for visiting La Quinta (8-6-2, 7-2-1). Erica Engelhard scored and Maurine Bosman had nine saves for Bolsa Grande.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 4, Whittier Christian 2--Lisa Mudrick scored twice and Liz Padilla and Megan Mahlstadt each scored once for host Capistrano Valley Christian (8-6-4, 5-5-4). Farah Ruvalaba and Carrie Crigler scored for Whittier Christian (6-13-1, 4-9-1).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Savanna 1--Michele Lytle scored once and had two assists and Amber Dickey scored twice and had one assist for Valencia. Savanna got its goal when an errant pass by Valencia got past its own goalie. Valencia is 12-10-1, 8-1-1. Teresa Seja had 14 saves and Chris Arevalo had six saves for Savanna, which finished 2-7-1 in league.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 8, Century 0--Kristen Lowery scored two goals and Blinn Roberson, Betsy Yaap, Amy Reynolds, Marcie Hughes, Ali Lehmann and Christy Lunceford each scored once for Trabuco Hills (15-3-4, 8-0-2).

Estancia 6, Costa Mesa 0--Danielle Straub and Lauren Weaver each scored two goals and Jackie Connelly and Claudia Ruggiero each scored one for host Estancia (15-2-4, 8-0-2), which tied with Trabuco Hills for the league title. Monica LeSage and Sara Ackelson each had 10 saves for Costa Mesa (2-13-1, 2-8-0).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 2, Newport Harbor 0--Lisa Boatman and Becky Todd each scored in the second half for Corona del Mar (13-4-4, 8-0-2), which had already clinched the league title.

University 4, Saddleback 0--Carrie Caposino scored three goals and Sandra Brishka scored one for host University (10-5-7, 6-1-3). Elizabeth Herrera had 11 saves for Saddleback (2-14-2, 0-10).

Woodbridge 3, Tustin 0--Talia Emery scored twice and Anne-Marie Risquez scored once for visiting Woodbridge (11-5-5, 6-2-2). Michelle Helring had three saves for Woodbridge, while Tustin goalkeeper Julia Waterhouse had eight saves.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 5, Irvine 2--Denise Kenyon scored two goals for host El Toro (25-0-2, 8-0-2) the county’s top-rated team. Shawn Viloria, Shannon deAvila and Jenny Murray added the other goals for the Chargers. Heather Gilchrist and Samantha Lutch scored for Irvine (11-7-5, 2-5-3).
