Only a Few Can Fight Forest Fires

Applications for seasonal firefighting jobs with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection will be accepted for one day only Monday, officials said.

The one-year position will involve “firefighting and responding to structural, vehicle and wild land fires . . . and limited first aid at medical emergencies,” said department spokeswoman Sheri Bolick. Some basic maintenance work will also be required.

Pay starts at $1,733 per month, she said. Seasonal firefighters work an average of six months during the year.

Minorities and women are encouraged to apply for the 95 positions open in San Diego County, Bolick said. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Applications are available at most state agencies and at department headquarters at 2249 Jamacha Road, El Cajon. Completed applications must be turned in, in person, at headquarters between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Successful applicants will be called back for interviews in March, Bolick said. Those chosen will undergo two weeks of training, which will cover the basics of firefighting and administering first aid.
