Westendorf, a versatile 6-foot-7 forward, has occasionally played point guard this season for St. Margaret’s. But make no mistake, his primary role is scoring, and Friday he played his role to the hilt. Westendorf made 26 of 35 shots and scored 58 points--one of the four best single-game scoring performances in Orange County history--and St. Margaret’s defeated St. Michael’s Prep, 104-68. He also had 18 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. “He went through a mild two-game slump,” St. Margaret’s Coach Rick Bauer said, referring to games in which Westendorf scored 19 and 16 points. “We’re hoping he’s back and ready to put us on his shoulders for the playoffs.” Last season, Westendorf, who was the Academy League’s player of the year, helped St. Margaret’s to the Small School title game, where it lost to Ribet Academy.
Other top performers:
Mustapha Abdi, who scored a career-high 46 points in Huntington Beach’s 82-72 victory over Ocean View that gave the Oilers a share of the Sunset League title. Abdi also scored 36 in a 55-44 victory over Marina.
Rob Johnson, who scored 35 points for El Toro in a 64-62 victory over San Clemente and 36 points in a 70-62 victory over Irvine.
Justin Welham, who had two shutouts--a 2-0 victory over El Dorado and a 0-0 tie with Esperanza--as Katella won a share of the Empire League soccer championship.
