Jon Looney, who led Brea-Olinda High School to its first league football championship in 10 years, has been selected to coach the North team in the 32nd Orange County All-Star football game scheduled July 12 in Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

Eric Patton, who led Capistrano Valley High School to the Division II football championship last fall, has been selected to coach the South team.

Looney, 35, guided Brea-Olinda to the 1990 Orange League title in a season that included a 23-21 upset over perennial league power Valencia.

Looney played at Anaheim under legendary Coach Clare VanHoorebeke in his final season in 1973 and was a punter and offensive guard. He attended Cypress College, where he was an all-conference guard.

Looney’s staff will include Brea assistants Rob Perrance (offensive line), Al Bishop (offensive line), George Dena (offensive coordinator), Steve Teran (wide receivers), Dan Herrera (defensive line), Randy Worthington (outside linebackers), Mike Rhodes (inside linebackers) and Ken Lutz (defensive backs).

Patton was an All-American linebacker at Mater Dei High in 1967 and played on the school’s 4-A division championship team in 1965 that finished 12-0-1 under Coach Dick Coury, now offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

Patton will be assisted by two coaches who also played in the 1968 All-Star game. Line coaches Jim Berg (Mater Dei) and Carl Hansen (Westminster) are members of Patton’s staff at Capistrano Valley.

Looney will announce the 35-man North team April 6, Patton his South team April 13. Both begin workouts for the annual charity game June 24, the North team at Brea-Olinda High and the South at Capistrano Valley.
