Toreros’ Tourney Games to be Broadcast on Radio

The University of San Diego men’s basketball team will have its games in the West Coast Conference tournament broadcast on XTRA (690).

The tournament will be March 2-4 at Santa Clara’s Toso Pavilion.

Brad Cesmat will do play-by-play and Bill Walton will add color if USD reaches the championship game at 9 p.m. March 4.

Pairings for the first day of the tournament have yet to be determined, but if USD plays in one of two early games, XTRA will air that game live. If the Toreros play one of the later games, it will be tape delayed at approximately 10:30 p.m.

XTRA aired the USD-Portland game Feb. 2, and is scheduled to do the USD-Pepperdine game Feb. 23 on a tape-delayed basis.

Vernaldo Butler’s 27 points and nine rebounds led Christian Heritage to a 101-87 nonconference victory over Bethany College of California at Patrick Henry High.

The victory was the Hawks’ fifth in their last six games and improved their record to 9-15. Christian Heritage center Rob Meeter’s 17 rebounds tied his own school record, which he shared with two other players.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State (2-2) defeated BYU, 8-1, in a Western Athletic Conference match on SDSU’s West Courts. Ricardo Herrera defeated Herman Van de Casteele, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Herrera and Chris Numbers defeated George Chingas and Gabe Pate, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. BYU is 0-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

It only took three games for Cal State Long Beach to do away with San Diego State, 15-10, 15-11, 15-7, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Long Beach.

Brent Hilliard led Long Beach (12-1, 5-0) with 21 kills. Mike Schlagel and Sean Clark were high for SDSU (6-3, 2-2) with 11 each.

FIGURE SKATING

Three San Diegans placed among the top 10 in their respective groupings at the U.S. championships in Minneapolis. John Baldwin was second in the original program for junior men, Storey Ellis placed seventh in compulsory figures for junior women and Roman Fraden was ninth in original program for novice men.

WOMEN’S BOWLING

Wendy Macpherson of San Diego qualified third behind Tish Johnson and Robin Romeo for the stepladder finals of Wednesday’s Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour $35,000 Central Florida Classic at Winter Park, Fla.
