COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Burchit Shuts Out Citrus

Sophomore Jim Burchit struck out 14, allowed five hits and walked four as Fullerton College defeated Citrus, 1-0, in the first round of the Modesto baseball tournament.

Fullerton (8-4) scored in the fourth inning when Ken Humphrey reached first on an error and went to third on Ramon Apodaca’s single. Humphrey scored on David Moore’s sacrifice fly.

Citrus (3-5) got a runner to third with one out in the ninth, but Burchit struck out the last two batters.

In the Casey Stengel tournament:

Rancho Santiago 9, Southwestern 4--Medina Octavio had two hits and two runs batted in, John Rodriguez had two hits and three RBIs, and Rene Arias had three hits and an RBI for host Rancho Santiago (12-2). Rancho Santiago’s eight-game winning streak was ended earlier in the day in a 4-3 loss to Los Angles Harbor.

In the Bakersfield baseball tournament:

Orange Coast 13, Porterville 3--Orange Coast turned five double plays and had 19 hits. John Arnold was three for five with five RBIs, and Chris Larson was three for four with three RBIs for Orange Coast (6-1-1).

In nonconference softball:

Palomar 3, Rancho Santiago 1--Patty Romero had an RBI single for Rancho Santiago (3-3).
