COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Anteaters Sweep San Francisco State

Two late rallies helped UC Irvine sweep a doubleheader from San Francisco State in nonconference baseball Saturday at San Francisco.

Irvine (8-5) won the first game, 3-2, when Billy Bardens knocked in the winning run with a double in the top of the ninth inning.

The Anteaters rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the fifth on an RBI double by catcher Neil Weingarten and an RBI single by center fielder Chris Facione. Right-hander David Bladow (1-1) went the distance for UC Irvine (8-5).

In the second game, which Irvine won, 7-6, in seven innings, the Anteaters scored five runs in the seventh after trailing, 6-2.

In other nonconference baseball:

Cal State Northridge 7, Cal State Fullerton 0--Craig Clayton (2-1), who attended Loara High School, pitched a complete game, striking out six, walking none and allowing three hits for visiting Northridge (8-4). Clayton also had three hits, two runs batted in and scored a run and Mike Sims hit a bases-empty home run in the sixth for Northridge. Mike Berry had a hit and a stolen base for the Titans (3-8).

Chapman 2, Azusa Pacific 1--Doug Yates singled and Marvin Mack followed with a triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chapman the victory at Hart Park. Chapman took a 1-0 lead in the first when Torrie Sweet tripled and scored on Mark Landeros’ groundout to short. Azusa Pacific (3-3) tied it in the fourth when Todd Cutino reached on an error and eventually scored on George Velasquez’s single. Pete Coleman (2-1) went the distance for the victory, allowing four hits, three walks and striking out two. Sweet and Mack each had two hits for Chapman (3-7).

Claremont-Mudd 7-2, Christ College Irvine 3-6--Jeff Flaim led off the first game with a home run and had three RBIs for Claremont (1-2) in the opener. Robert Campillo hit a bases-empty home run in the first game for Christ College Irvine. CCI scored five runs on five hits in the first inning of the second game. Armando Olivares had two doubles and a three-run double for Christ College Irvine.

UC Riverside 9, Southern California College 6--Chad Townsend hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to give host UC Riverside (5-6-1) a 4-1 lead. Southern California College scored four runs in the ninth with the help of two walks, two errors and three hits. Doug Rystrom had three hits, scored a run and had two RBIs for Southern California College (3-4).

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 6, New Mexico State 3--Kelli Moore won, 6-0, 6-2, and Roseann Alva won, 6-3, 6-2, for Cal State Fullerton (2-2, 2-0) at UC Irvine. Pacific 5, UC Irvine 4--Pacific won four singles matches and a doubles match to win at UC Irvine. In the Arizona softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 8, New Mexico State 0 (5 innings mercy rule)--Charlotte Wiley hit a two-run home run and Kelly Hunt hit a bases-empty home run for Fullerton (8-1).

In a men’s track meet at UC Irvine:

UC Irvine wins--Matt Farmer won the long jump (23 feet 1 3/4 inches) and the triple jump (46-10) and Mike Nielson won the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes 58.76 seconds and the 3,000 meters (8:35.88) for UC Irvine, which defeated Cal State Bakersfield, Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego.

In a women’s track meet at UC Irvine:

UC Irvine wins--Kristi Kaufmann won the high jump (4-11) and the 100-meter hurdles for UC Irvine, which defeated Cal State Bakersfield, Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego.
