COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Drop Fourth in Row as Northridge Wins in 11

Cal State Fullerton lost its fourth consecutive baseball game as Cal State Northridge defeated the Titans, 5-4, in 11 innings in a nonconference game Sunday at Northridge.

Northridge led, 4-3, going into the ninth inning but Fullerton rallied to tie the score. Jim Betzold led off with a walk, took second on Frank Herman’s sacrifice and scored on Phil Nevin’s double. Nevin had five hits and scored a run for Fullerton (3-9).

Denny Vigo led off the 11th inning with a home run to give Northridge the victory.

In another nonconference baseball game:

Sacramento State 6, UC Irvine 4--A two-run home run by Mike Goodcase gave the Anteaters a 4-1 lead in the third, but Sacramento State (7-3) scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and added a single run in the seventh. Dave Taulk (3-0) struck out six for the victory. Joe Sewell (1-2) took the loss for Irvine (8-6).

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 8-2, Western New Mexico 3-1--Christy Wurster had three hits and scored two runs for host Chapman (7-1) in the first game, and teammate Sandy Olivas had two doubles and scored in the second game. Jackie Blake (4-0) struck out five and was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Cheri Schreck (3-1) had a no-hitter in the second game until she gave up a single with one out in the seventh. Schreck struck out seven.

In a Big West Conference women’s tennis match:

Pacific 8, Cal State Fullerton 1--Roseann Alva and Kelli Moore won at No. 1 doubles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, for the Titans (2-3, 2-1 in conference) at UC Irvine.

In nonconference lacrosse:

Chapman 15, San Diego 4--Mike Bonifozy scored eight goals for host Chapman (2-3).

At the San Diego Intercollegiate Invitational tennis tournament, UC Irvine and Chapman suffered disappointments as only one player from either team advanced to the second round of competition.

Chapman’s Laurent Dropsy defeated Carlos Vasquez of Cal Baptist in the first round before losing to Bill Pham of Cal State Long Beach in the second.
