PREP SOCCER: CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS : Chatsworth Sweeps to Victories

Share

Chatsworth High on Saturday became the first school in City history to win boys’ and girls’ soccer team titles in the same season with victories at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.

The girls started the sweep with a 6-1 victory over San Pedro, and the boys followed with a 1-0 decision over previously undefeated Bell.

The championship was the third in a row for the Chatsworth girls and the first for the boys.

The boys’ game was marked by controversy when a last-second goal by Bell (13-1-3) was disallowed because the referee said it came after the final whistle.

With one second remaining, Edgar Ferrer lobbed a corner kick to Oscar Dorado, who butted headed a shot into the upper-left corner of the Chatsworth goal for the apparent tying goal. But referee Herman Gompers said he blew the final whistle before the ball broke the plane of the goal.

“This was a perfectly legal goal because it was definitely in before the whistle,” Bell Coach William Albano said. “The play has to terminate (to end the match), even if there is a whistle.”

Albano said he will not file a protest.

Ed Ramos scored for Chatsworth (12-2-4).

In the girls’ game, sophomore forward Mary Oades set a City playoff record by scoring all six goals for the Chancellors (17-0) to beat San Pedro (20-3).
