Cal Poly Pomona Batters Aztec Pitching

Share

San Diego State continued to have pitching problems as Cal Poly Pomona scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 12-6 nonconference baseball victory Tuesday in Pomona.

Aztec starter Clint Borman (2-1) was chased in that second inning after Shannon Wright hit a two-run homer. The bullpen wasn’t much help, either. The Broncos (7-9) pounded 15 hits.

Greg Quam and Marcelino Garcia each went two for four for SDSU (10-6).

The University of San Diego handed Point Loma Nazarene its first shutout, winning a 5-0, nonconference game at PLNC.

John Fenn hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Kevin Herde (2-0) allowed only three hits in seven innings for USD (8-7-1). Jason Huntley went two for three for PLNC (9-4).

U.S. International fought back from a five-run deficit but came up short, losing 9-8 to UC Riverside (8-5-1) on the road. The big blow was a bases-loaded pop up to short center in the second inning. Lost in the sun, the ball fell in, and Riverside scored three runs.

Mike Garza, 3-for-4, had three RBIs, and Mike Murphy, 3-for-4, scored three runs for USIU (5-11). FOOTBALL
