Granada Hills’ Martin to Play for Weber State

Bryan Martin, a Times All-Valley quarterback from Granada Hills High, has signed a letter of intent to play next season at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

Martin, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior, passed for 1,912 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the Highlanders to the City Section 4-A Division semifinals and a 10-2 record. He will receive a full scholarship.

Weber State is a Division I-AA school that competes in the Big Sky Conference.

Jeff deLaveaga of Cal Lutheran and Tom Bruner of The Master’s College were selected to the All-District 3 basketball team.

DeLaveaga, a 6-4 junior, averaged 27.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, three assists and 2.5 steals.

Bruner, a 6-5 senior, averaged 14.5 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Marty Downen and Keith Halcovich of Hart High have been selected as Foothill League co-most valuable players. Downen and Halcovich, both 6-foot-5 senior forwards, helped lead Hart (19-7) to the league championship.

Downen led the team in scoring with a 16.7 average and grabbed 8.3 rebounds a game; Halcovich averaged 10.3 points and 11.9 rebounds.

Greg Herrick, who completed his fourth year as coach at Hart, was chosen as league coach of the year.

Chris Loll of Thousand Oaks High and Stephane Brown of Channel Islands were selected co-most valuable players of the Marmonte League. Loll, a 6-5 senior forward, averaged 25.2 points and 10.7 rebounds. Brown, a senior guard, averaged 21.4 points and 5.8 assists.

Ed Chevalier of Thousand Oaks and Don Salado of Channel Islands were named co-coaches of the year. Thousand Oaks and Channel Islands finished as league co-champions with 11-3 records.

Krissy Carpenter of Hart High has committed to play softball for the University of Kansas in the fall.

Carpenter, a two-time All-Foothill League shortstop, was recruited as a second baseman and pitcher. Last season, Kansas was 44-17.

Pepe Reilly of Glendale has advanced to the semifinals of the U. S. Amateur boxing championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Reilly defeated Pat Boyd of Flint, Mich., 5-0, Wednesday to advance to today’s semifinals in the 147-pound division.

Kerrie Marshall, a Moorpark College sophomore forward, was chosen most valuable player of the Western State Conference Northern Division.

She was joined on the all-division first team by Venessa Hackett and Marli Mactal of Ventura, Nicole Force of Oxnard, and Moorpark teammate Amy Chandler. Valley guards Tisa Rush and Sylvia Castaneda were chosen for the Southern Division first team. Canyons’ Kim Posey and Pierce’s Lisa Little were also first-team selections.

Soccer coaches from several Southland schools, including Cal State Northridge and Cal Lutheran, will present information about college soccer to players and parents tonight at 7 at Soccer Plus in Ventura.
