In another Big West Conference women’s game:
UC Santa Barbara 79, UC Irvine 61--UC Santa Barbara (16-11, 10-18) led, 36-33, at the half and then outscored host UC Irvine, 43-28, in the second half.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UCLA 5, UC Irvine 3--UC Irvine (5-3) won the top three singles matches at Irvine, the first time this season that top-ranked UCLA (15-0) has lost three singles matches. Brett Hanson-Dent defeated Jason Netter, 6-4, 6-0; Mike Roberts defeated Mark Knowles, 6-3, 6-3; and Carsten Hoffman defeated David Nainkin, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
In the Big West Conference men’s swimming and diving championships:
UC Santa Barbara wins--UC Santa Barbara’s 855 team points easily outdistanced runner-up Nevada Las Vegas’ 649 as the Gauchos won the championship for the 13th consecutive year. Cal State Long Beach (604) was third and UC Irvine (509) was fourth.
In the conference’s women’s championships:
Nevada Las Vegas wins--Nevada Las Vegas’ 847 1/2 points easily outdistanced second-place UC Santa Barbara’s 680 points to win the title and break a string of four consecutive titles by the Gauchos. UC Irvine finished a distant seventh with 204 points.
