PREP ROUNDUP : Tustin Cruises Past Costa Mesa in Baseball Tournament Opener
- Share via
Tustin High School scored seven unearned runs in the second inning and coasted to a 9-1 victory over Costa Mesa in the opening round of the Newport Elks baseball tournament Monday at Tustin High.
Second baseman Ben Munoz capped the seven-run inning with a two-run homer. Munoz, shortstop Zach Elliott and center fielder Shawn Green led Tustin’s 10-hit attack with two hits each.
Green, who entered the season with 101 career hits, chopped a two-run single to right in the second inning and then drilled a bases-empty home run over the right-field scoreboard. Green needs 26 more hits this season to tie former Laguna Hills’ standout Chris Sheff’s county career mark of 129 hits set in 1986-89.
Green hit only two homers last season, but Tustin Coach Vince Brown said the Stanford-bound senior has worked hard in the weight room over the summer to improve his strength.
