Carmel Murphy scored four of The Bishop’s School’s goals in its 6-0 victory Thursday over Christian in the San Diego Section Division IV girls’ soccer championships at Torrey Pines.

This was the first year either team advanced to the playoffs, but with the realignment of divisions and the addition of Division IV, these two teams had the opportunity to reach the finals.

It was the second victory over the season by top-seeded Bishop’s (20-3-1) over Christian (8-11-3), but Bishop’s Coach Zeke Knight said the Patriots were a very different team this time around.

“Christian gave us a good game,” Knight said. “They’re a much-improved team than the last time we met.”

Last year as a sophomore, Murphy set a section record for most goals scored in a season with 57. This season she finished with 49 goals, the third most prolific season by a goal scorer.

It was Bishop’s 10th shutout this season.

“Our defense has been good and strong all year,” Knight said. “They work well together. Our halfbacks really check back. It’s a team that’s well-balanced.”
