Rio Mesa High sophomore Marion Jones and Cocoa (Fla.) senior Zundra Feagin split a pair of races Sunday in the National Scholastic Indoor track and field championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N. Y.

Feagin, named the 1990 girls’ high school athlete of the year by Track & Field News, edged Jones in the 55-meter dash, 6.85 seconds to 6.91.

But Jones, the defending California state champion outdoors in the 100 and 200, came back to win the 200 in 23.89, a national indoor record for sophomores. Feagin finished second in 24.03. She had run a national-record 23.67 in a qualifying heat.

“That’s a fast time for running two tight turns,” Rio Mesa co-Coach Brian FitzGerald said of Jones’ time on the 200-meter indoor track.

In other events, Canyon’s Dave Hartman finished second in the two-mile run behind Angel Martinez of San Gabriel. Hartman ran 9:14.63 and Martinez clocked 9:11.84.
