It was shades of the Desert Storm military briefings, with a basketball twist.

Neither Brea-Olinda Coach Mark Trakh nor Hayward Moreau Coach Paul Phelps was initially eager to volunteer much information about their teams when asked about their game at 1:15 today for the girls’ Division II State title at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

But after clamming up briefly, Trakh and Phelps realized that there aren’t many secrets left about their teams. So they managed a few words.

“We mix things up,” Phelps said about the Mariners (30-2), who won the Northern California Regionals last Saturday with a 74-57 victory over previously unbeaten Sacramento El Camino. “We play pretty much up-tempo . . . we use the fast break quite a bit.”

For his part, Trakh stuck to divulging what he knew about Moreau.

“They’re quick, aggressive and scrappy,” Trakh said. “They hit the boards hard . . . it’s going to be a challenge.”

What Trakh could have added is that Brea (32-1) runs a patient, half-court offense based on high-percentage shots from around the perimeter and that it has a relentless man-to-man defense.

“We haven’t scouted them . . . but we know about them,” said Phelps, who is in his 11th season with the Mariners.

Even if he hasn’t seen the Ladycats recently, all Phelps has to do is recall the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions in 1984. Moreau, then ranked third in the state, ran into a Brea team sparked by Carrie Egan (28 points) and went down to a 78-57 defeat. Except for a summer league game in Lake Tahoe a couple of years ago, that has been the only meeting between the schools.

Until today. And Moreau seems to have a good chance to even the score.

The Mariners, champions of the Mission Valley League, enter their first State title game with 24 consecutive victories. Their only losses came in December against Grass Valley’s Nevada Union, 63-55, in a tournament and against Santa Rosa Ursuline, 52-39, in a nonleague game.

Moreau features five first-team all-league members, including 5-foot-10 junior forward/guard Denise Noleroth, 5-6 sophomore guard Jennifer Kennedy and 5-7 junior point guard Kim Manifesto.

Noleroth, who sat out most of last season with a back injury, averages 16 points, and Kennedy contributes 11. Manifesto, the team’s best defensive player, tied with Kennedy for a game-high 22 points against El Camino last Saturday.

Brea, meanwhile, has a 15-game winning streak dating back to its only defeat of the season, 58-43 to New York’s Christ the King in mid-January at Brea. The Ladycats advanced to their third consecutive State appearance--they won the Division III title in 1989 and were runners-up last season--with a 58-51 victory over Ventura last Saturday in the Southern California Regional final at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

The Ladycats, who have lost only four of 100 games since 1988-89, rely offensively on 5-11 junior forward Jody Anton (13.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists), 5-9 senior center Jinelle Williams (17.5 points, 8.2 rebounds) and 5-6 freshman point guard Nicole Erickson (11.3 points, 6.1 assists).

Only four other girls’ teams have played in three or more State championship games. Sacramento Grant heads the list with five, followed by San Diego Point Loma with four, Woodlake with four and Inglewood Morningside with three.
