Lawrence, Michels to be Honored Friday

Morse High quarterback Teddy Lawrence and La Jolla High defensive lineman John Michels have been named the offensive and defensive players of the year by the San Diego chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

They, along with 22 other players from San Diego County high schools, will be honored at the chapter’s 19th annual awards banquet at the Town and Country Convention Center in Mission Valley at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

San Diego State center Jason Bill and University of San Diego linebacker Lenny Territo will also be honored.

Orange Glen’s Rob Gilster will receive a “Coach of the Year” award and Morse’s John Shacklett a “Meritorious Coach of the Year” award.

All honored members must have maintained a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and been selected all-league at his position.

HIGH SCHOOLS

St. Augustine High School announced the hiring of Joe Medina as head football coach and the naming of Rick Stewart as athletic director to replace Marty Martin, who held both positions until his resignation in December.

After playing football at Villanova, Medina served as the defensive coordinator at Cascia Hall Prep School in Tulsa, Okla. Cascia won the state 2-A championship in 1989.

Stewart is in his 12th year at St. Augustine and was the head football coach from 1982 to 1985.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State (8-2) defeated Clemson, 8-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU. For the Aztecs, Ricardo Herrera defeated Gerg Seilkop, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Joe McDonough defeated Chris Munnerlyn, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, SDSU’s Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson defeated Munnerlyn and George Lampert, 6-3, 6-4. Clemson is 8-6.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

University of San Diego forward Christi English received the top award--most valuable player--at the team’s award’s banquet at the University Center. English, a 6-3 senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., was previously named All-West Coast Conference after she averaged 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during the 1990-91 season.

Senior forward Molly Hunter was named top defender, junior guard Julie Doria was named most improved and sophomore guard Angie Straub received the team’s hustle award. The Toreras finished 14-13, 9-5 in the WCC.
