School: Brea-Olinda High

Sport: Basketball

Position: Center

Class: Senior

Lacking the bulk and height of many of her opponents, Williams, at 5 feet 9 and about 135 pounds, isn’t often in the position of being an intimidating post player. She gets the job done--averaging 17 points and eight rebounds in her third season as a starter--in an understated manner. “Her stats won’t overwhelm you,” Brea-Olinda Coach Mark Trakh said. “But the bottom line is she’s 99-4 playing center for us over the last three years.” Saturday, Williams helped Brea win its second state championship in three years. She scored 10 points in the first half as the Ladycats jumped out to a comfortable early lead against Hayward Moreau. Weakened by the flu, Williams scored only six points in the second half, but had 11 rebounds in the 54-46 victory. “She started out fast then faded,” Trakh said. “If she hadn’t been sick, I think she could have had 30 that day.” Williams said she was less concerned with individual honors than with making sure the Ladycats won the championship, one that escaped them last season. “I think this year everyone was really on a mission to go back up there and prove to ourselves and our coaches that we could do it and that we still had it in us,” Williams said.

Other top performers:

Jody Anton, who had 22 points, 13 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists in Brea-Olinda’s state championship victory.

Shelly Fuller, who had a grand slam and a three-run triple for Westminster in a 10-5 victory over Millikan.

Amy Godwin, who came within a walk of a perfect game in a 2-0 no-hit victory for Mater Dei over Garden Grove. Godwin also tripled and scored one of the Monarchs’ runs.

Amber Parkinson, who set the 3,200 meters meet record at the Dana Hills Invitational, finishing in 11 minutes 17.2 seconds, and won the 800 (2:24.4) as Orange Lutheran took the team title.
