USD Rallies to Top Chapman

Jim Keen’s two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the sixth capped a five-run inning as the University of San Diego rallied to beat Chapman College, 7-4, Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

Chapman, which outhit USD 12-11 but left 15 men on base to the Toreros’ seven, had a 4-0 lead after 5 1/2 innings. USD scored all five runs in the sixth after two outs. The Toreros added a run in both the seventh and eighth.

Keen finished with three hits in four trips, including two doubles and the three RBIs.

Pat Crema, in 2 1/3 innings of relief, got the win to improve to 2-1. Chris Collins threw three shutout innings for his second save.

USD, which improved to 12-14-2, plays host to Santa Clara in a doubleheader Saturday. Chapman fell to 8-17.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State (9-2) won its eighth consecutive match with a 6-3 victory over visiting Texas Tech. SDSU’s Ricardo Herrera was upset at No. 1 singles by Michael Slawson, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. The Aztecs won the other five singles matches.

At No. 2 singles, SDSU’s Joe McDonough defeated Richard Dopson, 6-4, 6-2. Other singles winners for SDSU were Kerry Safdie, Chris Numbers, Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson.

VOLLEYBALL

Officials for the United States men’s national team announced its participation in the 1991 World League, with four events stops in San Diego. The U.S. men participated in the league in its inaugural year in 1990, and went 1-11 en route to a last-place finish in their division.

The team will play in Group B this year.
