Kim Barfield of Lynwood Tops List of Southeast Girls All-Star Team Selections

Kim Barfield of Lynwood, a senior who averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals a game, heads The Times’ 1991 Southeast Prep Girls All-Star Basketball Team as Player of the Year.

Barfield, who made the all-star team for the second consecutive year, is also a track star and has lettered in volleyball.

“She’s the top female athlete at Lynwood,” Coach Maurice Roberson said of Barfield, who also sings in her church choir.

The coach of the year is Bob Santisteven, who led Pius X to a 19-7 record and the Camino Real League championship.

A look at the rest of the Southeast all-star team, which includes Bell Gardens’ Brenda Pantoja, who is on the team for the third year in a row:

Bridgett Polk, Lynwood--”She cannot be guarded one-on-one,” Roberson said of Polk. She averaged 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, and also led the Knights in three-point shooting.

Brenda Pantoja, Bell Gardens--The MVP of the Whitmont League for the third consecutive year, the 5-8 Pantoja plans to play at the University of the Pacific. She averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists this season and can play all positions.

Michelle Esparza, El Rancho--A 5-9 junior who likes to drive for the basket, she can also shoot the short jumper. Esparza, a junior, averaged 26.4 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

Lisa Chacon, Pioneer--A defensive-minded 5-10 senior, Chacon averaged 12.7 points and two rebounds. She made the all-Whitmont League team.

Rochelle Travers, California--A 5-4 senior, Travers made 44 three-point shots (45%) and averaged 17.8 points. “She gives everything she’s got,” California Coach George Dayhuff said.

Kristen Ebright, Whitney--She added 73 three-point baskets this season to bring her career total to 110. She averaged 20 points a game and also excelled as a passer. You never have to tell her anything a second time,” Whitney Coach Paula Strande said. She was the Olympic League’s MVP.

Beverly Stiglbauer, St. Joseph--A 5-11 senior, she led the Jesters into the playoffs and was the MVP of the Angelus League. A good outside shooter, she averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds.

Faye Hagan, Glenn--”Her rebounding and defense were outstanding,” Glenn Coach Richard Drake said of this 5-9 junior. “She’s a definite Division I prospect.” Hagan averaged 20.3 points, 12.4 rebounds and seven steals. She was MVP of the Suburban League.

Sherise Sandoz, Pius X--Determination and aggressiveness define this 5-8 sophomore, who averaged 15.6 points and 18 rebounds. The Camino League MVP held her own against taller opponents.
