PREP ROUNDUP : Newhan’s 3 Hits Pace Esperanza

David Newhan had three hits, including a three-run home run, scored three runs and stole two bases as Esperanza defeated Colorado Cherry Creek, 12-2, in the first round of the Upper Deck Classic on Monday at Esperanza High School.

Todd Hennigar (2-0), who entered the game for Esperanza with two outs in the fourth and the score tied, 2-2, picked up the victory. He allowed only an infield single in 2 1/3 innings of work. Esperanza (9-1) scored four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth.

In other first-round games of the Upper Deck Classic:

El Dorado 5, Washington Hudson’s Bay 2--Brett Hunt’s two-run double keyed a four-run sixth inning as El Dorado (8-2) upset Hudson’s Bay, ranked 21st nationally by USA Today. Andy Brazeel (1-1) pitched four innings of hitless relief for the victory.

La Quinta 13, Arizona Canyon del Oro 6--Scott Summerell and Chad Leckie each had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs and Don Hopkins had a three-run homer and four RBIs for La Quinta (10-2) at Esperanza.

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Irvine 12, Century 1--Bob Ray allowed only four hits in six innings to help Irvine (6-4) advance to the semifinals. Ray (3-0) struck out four and walked two. Seven Vaqueros drove in at least one run each with catcher Jason Minici driving in two. Mark Hoffman added two hits and two stolen bases.

Trabuco Hills 3, Villa Park 2--David Burkholder (1-0) allowed only three hits, struck out seven and walked five for Trabuco Hills (3-4) in a consolation-round game at Villa Park.

All other games in the tournament were called because of wet fields and will be played today.

In the West Anaheim Lions tournament:

Sunny Hills 9, Westminster 5--Brent Howes drove in three runs with a double in the fourth inning to key a four-run inning that gave the Lancers a 5-4 lead at Glover Stadium. Mark Veronda hit a bases-empty home run in the first inning and Kenny Overby had two hits and an RBI for Sunny Hills (8-3).

In the Pride of the Coast Tournament:

All games called--The eight second-round games were moved to today because of wet fields.

In the Western States Invitational golf tournament:

Marina leads--The Vikings are the first-day leaders in the two-day tournament at Rancho Canada Country Club in Carmel.

Marina shot 390, Palm Desert (396) is second and Righetti (401) is third. Dan Dalton had a two-over 73 for Marina. Brian Rea shot 77 and Blake Alban 78 for Marina.
