Huber In Semis of Easter Bowl Championships

Top-seeded Ditta Huber of La Jolla advanced to today’s girls’ 16s semifinals of the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships at the Doral Resort and Country Club in Miami after a come-from-behind victory in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Huber, who defeated sixth-seeded Julie Steven of Wichita, Kan. 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, will play third-seeded Diana Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., in the semifinals. Spadea defeated Joy Mitchell of College Park, Md., 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

In girls’ 18 third round, 14th-seeded Le Ann Rostovsky, also of La Jolla, lost to fifth-seeded Lisa Pugliese of Boca Raton, 6-3, 6-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego defeated Northwestern, 5-1, in a nonconference match at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Steve Herdoiza, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 for USD (10-11). USD’s Fredrik Axsater defeated Giora Payes, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 and at No. 3, Kevin Bradley defeated Todd Occomy 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

TRACK AND FIELD

Scott Sargent was the only double winner for UC San Diego in a triangle meet at UCSD. Sargent won the hammer throw with 186 feet, 9 inches and the discus with 150 feet, 3 inches. MIT scored 73 points, UCSD had 51 and Concordia scored 40 points. In the high jump Ian Cooke cleared 6 feet, 8 inches, tying the school record set in 1980. Other winners for UCSD were; Alan Meadows with a time a 57.35 in the 400-meter hurdles; Paul Johnson with a pole vault of 14 feet, 8 inches and Ken Crawford with a javelin throw of 155 feet, 3 inches.

The UCSD women competed against Concordia but no team scoring was kept. Shannon Quigley won both the shotput (44 feet, 7 inches) and discus (160 feet, 7 inches) for UCSD. Another double winner for UCSD was Vicki Dunckley who won the 400 meters in 61.61 and the 200 meters in 27.72. Susan Christy set a school record of 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump, breaking her old record of 5-5 1/2 she set last year.
