HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : 5 Wins in 2 Days Equals a Title for Thousand Oaks

David Skeels went four for four with a double, triple and two runs batted in to lead Thousand Oaks High to a 16-2 win over Exeter in the championship game of the upper bracket in the Visalia Invitational on Thursday.

Because of inclement weather, Thousand Oaks (7-4) was forced to play five games in two days--and the Lancers won all five.

Earlier Thursday, Bryan Corey’s single scored Jim Chergey with one out in the seventh in the Lancers’ 7-6 win over Visalia Redwood. Ryan Kritscher was four for six in the two games.

Senior right-handers Jeff Naster and Corey (1-0) combined for the victory against Visalia Redwood and senior left-hander Chris Loll and junior right-hander Craig Arnold (1-0) combined for the win over Exeter.

Naster started against Visalia Redwood and was relieved by Corey in the fourth, but he returned in the seventh to pick up the save.

In other baseball games:

Taft 5, Cleveland 0--Nathan Voytek, a 5-foot-10 sophomore transfer from Washington, Pa., threw his third shutout in four starts to lead Taft in a Northwest Valley Conference game Thursday at Taft.

Voytek (3-1) allowed two singles, struck out four, walked two and used just 73 pitches. In previous shutouts over Venice and Granada Hills, he tossed a one-hitter and four-hitter.

Greg Rosenzweig was two for three and scored twice and outfielder John Soto hit his fourth home run for Taft (6-5, 3-3 in league play). Cleveland is 1-5.

Granada Hills 2, Reseda 1 (eight innings)--Heath McElwee delivered two-out, run-scoring hits in the seventh and eighth innings, the last a double that scored Robert Vasquez to give host Granada Hills (5-5, 3-3) a Northwest Valley Conference win.

McElwee also singled home Vasquez, who again had walked, with two out in the seventh. Bryan Martin and Vasquez (1-1) combined to limit Reseda (1-5, 0-5) to three hits and strike out nine. Vasquez was two for two and scored twice.

El Camino Real 5, San Fernando 3--Randy Wolf had two hits and Sean Boldt (3-0) allowed just five hits to lead host El Camino Real (4-2, 4-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Gregg Sheren tripled home a run and Greg Lederman hit a two-run home run for El Camino Real.

Jose Nunez homered for San Fernando (5-5, 3-3).

Sylmar 12, Canoga Park 2--Jimmy Lemos was three for three and stole three bases for host Sylmar (6-3, 5-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Terry Thorpe had two hits and Rene Navarro hit a two-run home run for Sylmar.

Poly 9, Monroe 0--Raul Torres and Steve Chavez each drove in three runs for host Poly (9-1, 6-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Torres had three hits and a solo home run and Chavez hit a bases-loaded triple in the first inning.

Robert Barron (4-0) allowed two hits in five innings to pick up the win.

Verdugo Hills 6, Marshall 2--Jesus Carrasco threw a two-hitter, struck out nine and walked two in the Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills.

It was the first complete game of the season for Carrasco, who gave up one earned run.

Matt Ward, who has a six-game hitting streak, was two for two with an RBI for Verdugo Hills (2-5-1, 2-3). The Dons stole eight bases, including three each by Larry Gouger and Ray Medina.

Hueneme 11, San Francisco Lowell 9--Jose Reyes was three for five and tripled to lead Hueneme (5-2) in the first round of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Chris Baker, Mike Ortega and Ed Montez each had two hits for Hueneme.

Camarillo 15, Moorpark 0--Geoff Gordon, Dan Hile and Jason Anderson combined for a one-hitter for visiting Camarillo (6-3) in a nonleague game.

Hile, who also had a triple, and Robert Sanchez each drove in three runs.

Chaminade 9, Alemany 6--Bill Blair and Chris Morton each had three RBIs for visiting Chaminade in a Mission League game. Blair hit a three-home run and Chris Morton hit a bases-loaded double in the second inning that gave Chaminade a 3-2 advantage it would not relinquish.

Brent Lubig came in the relief of Keith Evans to in the sixth to pick up his second save.

Arizona Spring Classic--There was very little spring to this classic. Rain washed out the tournament in Phoenix and sent home Simi Valley (10-2), which won its pool with a 3-1 record and advanced to the semifinals without an opportunity to win a title.

Coach Mike Scyphers said Thursday that he will propose a plan in which the four teams in the winners’ bracket can play to determine a champion at a later date.

SOFTBALL

Sylmar 13, Monroe 0--Ruby Gonzalez (6-0) struck out 14 and allowed just two hits to lead host Sylmar (7-0, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Traci Hanna was three for five with four RBIs.

Calabasas 6, Louisville 2--Pitcher Jackie Stafford recorded eight strikeouts and scattered three singles in a nonleague game at Calabasas.

Stafford (1-2) also went two for three with a double, two runs and an RBI. Kristi Thomsen also had two hits--including a double--and an RBI for the Coyotes (5-2).

Reseda 19, Kennedy 0--Michelle Brewer threw a no-hitter for Reseda (4-1, 1-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference game. Brewer faced 22 batters and struck out five. She also was three for three, including a double, and drove in three runs.

San Fernando 22, Taft 4--Raquel Naranjo gave up one hit through four innings and finished with six strikeouts in a Northwest Valley Conference game at home. Liz Cambaliza went two for four for the Tigers (6-7, 1-1) with five RBIs and three runs scored. Sally Ventura scored four runs for San Fernando.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Rio Mesa 82, San Marcos 54--Rio Mesa’s Patrick Van Scoy threw a personal-best and region-leading 56 feet 6 1/2 inches in a Channel League meet at Rio Mesa almost a month after nearly severing a finger on his non-throwing hand.

Van Scoy also won the discus at 147-11.
