PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Santiago’s Kissell Takes Care of Pacifica
Pitcher Mike Kissell threw a four-hitter and drove in two runs to lead Santiago to a 6-2 victory over host Pacifica in a Garden Grove League game Monday.
Kissell, a two-year starter, drove in his runs with a long single to center field in the first inning. The Cavaliers (8-5, 1-1 in league) sent eight batters to the plate in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Santiago extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Jamie Estrada led off with a towering 340-foot home run to right center. Balfred Guzman then walked, stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball. He scored on Scott McGarrh’s single.
The Mariners (7-8, 1-2) scored twice in the fourth. Designated hitter Justin Blaisdell singled and then scored on a long double by Mark Wolfson. Wolfson reached third on a passed ball and scored on an error by first baseman Rich Montoya. Kissell limited Pacifica to one hit the rest of the game.
“I struggled during the first couple of innings, but I got more comfortable as the game went on,” said Kissell, a 6-foot-4 senior who improved his record to 4-1. He struck out four and allowed two walks.
Pacifica’s leading hitter, Chris Castellano, who entered the game batting .429, was hitless in three at bats.
