HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Orange Glen’s Freetly Subdues San Dieguito

Despite allowing two runs, Orange Glen’s Jeff Freetly threw a no-hitter Tuesday against visiting San Dieguito. Freetly, a junior right-hander, struck out nine and walked four in eighth-ranked Orange Glen’s 5-2 victory, the Palomar League opener for both teams.

San Dieguito (1-7) scored its runs in the sixth on two errors and two walks. The first error came on a grounder to second baseman Damon Vinje, the other on a wild throw by catcher Ryan Eldridge after a bunt. Orange Glen right fielder Steve Kirsch saved Freetly’s no-hitter in the fourth when he made a running catch of a line drive.

Although he only allowed one earned run, Freetly’s ERA rose to 0.67 from 0.50. In 21 innings, Freetly (3-0) has allowed two earned runs. Orange Glen’s Brian Blake was two for two with an RBI, and Vinje went two for three with two RBIs.

In other Palomar games:

Poway 8, Rancho Buena Vista 0--No. 2 Poway (9-2, 1-0) scored in every inning but the second, and Miles Kelly (4-0) held the Longhorns (6-3, 0-1) in check with 10 strikeouts. Kelly also went two for two with two RBIs.

Vista 5, Mt. Carmel 4--Mt. Carmel (6-5-2, 0-1) scored three runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. But the Sundevils gave it away in the eighth when catcher Matt Miller dropped a third strike with two outs, allowing Vista’s Benny Valdovinos to score the winning run. Vista improved to 3-6, 1-0.

Fallbrook 4, Torrey Pines 1--Jose Gonzalez (four for four) led an 11-hit attack for Fallbrook (6-2, 1-0). Winning pitcher Tim Jones added two hits. Torrey Pines fell to 2-8, 0-1.

Avocado League

Rancho Bernardo 4, Escondido 3--Escondido’s Joe Pippen was thrown out trying to tie the game with two outs in the seventh. Mark Redman took the loss, but allowed only three hits and struck out 13. Rancho Bernardo improved to 3-7, 1-0. Escondido fell to 1-7, 0-1.

San Pasqual 8, Ramona 5--Brian Moss went three for four with a three-run homer, and Marin Soto was two for four with two RBIs for San Pasqual (4-5, 1-0). Ramona’s Todd Dick was two for three, and Louis Ethington, who leads the county in hitting at .652, had a hit in four at-bats. Ramona fell to 4-5-1, 0-1.

San Marcos 7, Oceanside 2----Junior Ryan Dunne (2-0) allowed two unearned runs in five innings, and Chris Young struck out four in two innings of hitless relief. Justin Woodard had a pair of doubles and Denny McAdams a two-run double for No. 9 San Marcos (7-2, 1-0). Oceanside fell to 2-10, 0-1.

City Conference Tournament

Mission Bay 12, Hoover 1--Jesus Munoz (three RBIs) and catcher Jason Enomoto (two RBIs) led Mission Bay (6-3) over Hoover (1-8).

Coronado 3, Point Loma 1--Despite scattering six hits, Ray Plummer took the loss for Point Loma (5-6). Coronado improved to 2-4-1.

University City 5, St. Augustine 4--Senior Mike Saipe had three RBIs, including the game-winner with two outs in the ninth on a double over the center fielder’s head. Saipe, who was vying for a county-leading fifth victory, struck out 10 in eight innings. Ben Mohr (1-0) pitched the ninth.

Adam Stuart added two hits for the host Centurions (8-1). Roger Alvarez went two for four, and Memo Lopez hit a two-run homer for St. Augustine (5-4).

Lincoln 16, Madison 13--Lincoln rallied from a 9-1 deficit with five runs in the fourth and six in the fifth. Winning pitcher Andre Douglas (2-1) went two for three with five RBIs to lift his batting average to .640.

Vic Castaneda was four for five, and Tobias Price, who picked up a save, had three RBIs for Lincoln (4-4). Madison fell to 1-7.

La Jolla 6, San Diego 3--La Jolla took the hard route but came away with an upset of seventh-ranked San Diego (9-2-1). Viking starter senior Eric Vann (3-0) pitched his first complete game and struck out 11, but he also yielded 11 hits.

Trailing 3-1, La Jolla (7-1) rallied for a run in the bottom of the third and two each in the fifth and sixth. Vann was two for three with three RBIs, including a sacrifice fly.

Mira Mesa 10, Kearny 0--Ryan Cunningham (2-0) and Steve Weiss combined for a two-hitter, and Lee McAfee went three for four as No. 3 Mira Mesa (10-2-1) routed Kearny (2-6-1).

USDHS 10, Serra 3--David Sanchez tripled with the bases loaded in the second, Gavin Millay hit a two-run homer and Jeff Moore doubled in two to lead USDHS (6-4) over Serra (9-3-1).

Crawford 3, Marian 2--Johnny Verdin (2-2) made a winner of himself and Crawford (2-6) by driving in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning with his second single. Verdin allowed only four hits, including two in the bottom of the eighth. He struck out seven and walked one. Beto Martinez struck out eight in five innings for Marian (6-2-1).

Nonleague

Santana 11, Granite Hills 3--No. 6 Santana scored five runs on three hits in the first two innings then erupted for six in the fifth inning at Granite Hills (3-3-1). Overall, the Sultans (8-1-1) had 10 hits with Chad Barry, Mike Romo and Gabe Hernandez getting two each. Shane Hobbs and Kimo Hanson had home runs in that six-run fifth.

El Capitan 17, Valhalla 3--Bobby Dreher went two for with two runs scored and two RBIs and Dylan Smith went three for five with a double and four RBIs for El Capitan (5-6), which had 16 hits. Jason Reed struck out seven to pick up the victory. Valhalla, ranked 10th, fell to 6-3.

Monte Vista 7, El Cajon Valley 4--Carl Cadwell went two for three for Monte Vista (5-2). El Cajon Valley fell to 1-7.

SOFTBALL

Ramona 4, San Pasqual 3--Ramona defeated San Pasqual for the first time since joining the Avocado League 13 years ago. After tripling in the sixth inning, Corey Stultz (two for three), scored the winning run on a bunt by pinch-hitter Heather Clark.
