COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Squeezes Golden West in Softball

Alisha Nelson’s squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Tina Fuata with the winning run as Orange Coast defeated Golden West, 1-0, in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Wednesday.

Fuata, who had all three of the Pirates’ hits, had opened the inning with a double. Kristin Heizer (8-3) pitched a three-hitter and struck out two for her second shutout of the season. Orange Coast improves to 23-11, 6-2 in conference.

Pam Fogg (5-6) took the loss for Golden West (10-11, 3-4).

In other Orange Empire Conference softball:

Fullerton 7, Rancho Santiago 5--Fullerton broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Frances Garcia hit a leadoff triple and scored on a passed ball, and Pita Licon drove in Erika Ostergaard with a single for an insurance run. Ostergaard (8-11) shut down Rancho Santiago (6-12, 0-7) in the seventh for a complete-game victory. Angelique Romo had two runs batted in, two stolen bases and a run for host Fullerton (9-14, 6-2).

Cypress 4, Riverside 0 (9 innings)--Laura Corson (17-6) pitched a one-hitter, striking out six and walking none, and also had an RBI and scored for visiting Cypress (24-8, 6-0). Cypress scored four runs in the ninth inning on three hits, a walk, a passed ball and an error.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Westmont 0--Masui Allen had 12 kills and Tony Murtz had five blocks in host OCC’s 15-3, 15-10, 15-7 victory. The Pirates improved to 12-2, 9-2.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Orange Coast 381, Fullerton 398, Rancho Santiago 399--Orange Coast’s Ken Calvert shot a par 72 for medalist honors and Chris Keyte finished second at 74. Dave Robinson and Chris Lowery each shot a 76 for OCC at the El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
