SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The anticipated showdown between Rio Mesa High sprinter Marion Jones and Zundra Feagin of Cocoa, Fla., will have to wait another week.

The premier attraction at the Oakland Relays on Saturday at Cal’s Edwards Stadium failed to materialize when Feagin, who led the national prep list in the 100 and 200 meters last year, opted to concentrate on Cocoa High’s sectional meet rather than fly across the country to challenge Jones.

So with Feagin out of the way, Jones turned her attention to the clock. And she wound up beating that as well.

Jones got out to a swift start in the 100 meters and blazed to an 11.40-second win with a legal 1.21 meter-a-second tail wind. The time was good enough to establish a national sophomore-class record as well as a national age-15 best. The old record of 11.47, for both classifications, was set in 1979 by Michele Glover of Pennsauken, N.J.

Jones’ personal-best time also moved her to eighth on the all-time U. S. high school list and is the third fastest by a California prep. She also reclaimed the national lead from Feagin, who ran 11.58 in the Florida Relays two weeks ago. Jones first ran a nation-leading 11.61 in the Spartan Relays on March 2.

Jones and Feagin, who has lifetime bests of 11.35 and 23.13, will meet in the 100 and 200 at the Arcadia Invitational next Saturday. Though Jones has beaten Feagin, Track & Field News magazine’s female high school athlete of the year in 1990, four times in five tries, she is looking forward to setting her starting blocks next to her East Coast rival at Arcadia.

“I always look forward to having someone like Zundra to compete with,” Jones said. “She’ll be there next week and I’ll be ready for her.”

Despite Feagin’s absence Saturday, the 100 was still loaded with talent. Tike Jackson of Bakersfield and Lesa Parker of Oakland Bishop O’Dowd finished sixth and eighth in the state 100 final a year ago. Parker outleaned Ferguson to finish second Saturday in 12.15.

What made Jones’ performance in the 100 even more impressive was the fact it was her third race of the day, and it followed a nation-leading effort in the 400.

Jones was not originally entered in the invitational 400, but when she was informed Feagin would not be running, Rio Mesa co-Coach Brian FitzGerald scrambled for an available lane.

And Jones made good use of it, running 54.66 to lop .28 seconds off her nation-leading standard set in the Spartan Relays.

Jones exploded off the final curve to win by 20 meters over Shundra Crummie of Vallejo Hogan, who ran 57.56 to finish second.

Jones opened the day with a running-start 10.8 anchor leg on the Spartans’ fourth-place 4 x 100 relay (49.00) and concluded it with a sizzling 22.7 split on the 4 x 200 relay team, which was subsequently disqualified for passing out of the handoff zone.

What made Jones’ anchor leg so impressive, besides the time, was the fact it was run into a 6.12-meters-a-second wind.

In other events, Rio Mesa’s Matt Carrillo leaped 21 feet 6 1/2 inches to win the invitational long jump and Alycia Burnham, also of Rio Mesa, placed third in the girls’ invitational long jump with a leap of 17-4.
