Kristine Quance of Northridge earned a pair of berths on the U. S. swimming team for the Pan Pacific championships with two runner-up finishes at the U. S. Spring Nationals in Federal Way, Wash.

Quance was second to Anita Nall in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke Thursday and she finished behind Janet Evans of Placentia in the 400 individual medley Friday.

In the breaststroke, Quance, 16, finished in 2 minutes 29.88 seconds--almost four seconds faster than she swam last August in the Summer Nationals. In the longer race, she timed 4:44.86. Evans won in 4:44.07.

Those performances make Quance, a sophomore at Granada Hills High, part of the U. S. national “A” team that will compete in the Pan Pacific championships Aug. 22-25 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Quance also finished seventh in the 200 butterfly in 2:17.67.

Another area swimmer, Jason Stelle of Agoura High, took 14th in the men’s 200 backstroke in 2:03.99.

Hart High graduate Stephanie Keeler, a freshman catcher for the University of Hawaii’s softball team, has been named Big West Conference player of the week for her performances in four conference games against UC Santa Barbara last week.

Keeler is only the third Hawaii player to earn the honor. Hawaii (20-14, 4-10 in conference play) has not had a softball player named conference player of the week since March of 1987.

During last week’s competition, which included four games in the Hawaii Invitational tournament, Keeler finished nine for 21 (.429) with two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Keeler is batting .304 this season and leads the team in runs batted in (15) and doubles (three).
