HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Kennedy Powers Past Sylmar

Jeff Tagliaferri had two doubles and Rick Nadeau had a triple and a home run as Kennedy High defeated Sylmar, 8-6, Saturday in a second-round game of the Holt-Willis tournament.

Kennedy (9-5) will play host to Granada Hills in the semifinals Monday at 11 a.m.

Dereck Ornelas was two for three with two stolen bases and Cain Camarillo had two hits for Sylmar (10-4).

In other Holt-Willis tournament games:

Chatsworth 7, Birmingham 2--Mitch Root had two hits to lead the Chancellors in a second-round game. Birmingham’s Mike Malkin homered to lead off the game.

Poly 10, Taft 5--Poly scored five runs in the 11th inning of the second-round game.

El Camino Real 16, North Hollywood 7--Daniel Cey went four for five with a triple to lead El Camino Real (6-4) in a second-round consolation game.

Monroe 2, Grant 0--Adrian Lovrich (3-1) and Chris Frith-Smith limited Grant to three hits in a second-round consolation game.

Cleveland 3, University 2--Cleveland scored a run in the ninth to give Mike Sutyak (1-0) a win in his first appearance in a second-round consolation game. Dave Cipolla doubled for Cleveland.

Granada Hills 8, Monroe 2--Heath McElwee was two for four and drove in three runs and Sam Voita had two hits to lead Granada Hills in a first-round game.

Kennedy 12, Eagle Rock 7--Jeff Tagliaferri hit a three-run home run to lead Kennedy in a first-round game. John Davis had two hits and three runs batted in for Kennedy.

San Fernando 3, Grant 2--Damacio Mendoza hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to give San Fernando a first-round win.

Sylmar 11, Westchester 7--Robert Garcia was four for four and scored four runs for Sylmar in a first-round game. Dereck Ornelas had two triples and Cain Camarillo drove in four runs for Sylmar.

Taft 7, North Hollywood 4--Michael Krasner went three for three with a two-run home run for Taft in a first-round game.

Chatsworth 5, Cleveland 0--Chatsworth’s Brandon Nickens pitched a five-hitter in a first-round game. Nestor Martinez tripled for Chatsworth and Dave Cipolla doubled for Cleveland.

Birmingham 3, University 0--Mike Malkin and Mike Velasco each had two hits for Birmingham (6-7) in a first-round game.

EAST L. A. TOURNAMENT

Verdugo Hills 10, Roosevelt 7--Pat Eubanks (1-1) earned the win and had three hits for Verdugo Hills in a first-round game.

South Gate 6, Van Nuys 2--Alex Alvarenga went two for four with a triple and Tony Gonzales doubled for Van Nuys (2-6) in a first-round game.

EL SEGUNDO TOURNAMENT

Simi Valley 6, Arcadia 3--Tyler Nelson went three for three with two RBIs and Ryan Briggs added three hits to lead Simi Valley (13-2) in the third-place game.

NONLEAGUE

Alemany 4-22, St. Francis 2-13--Freshman Bill Scheffels struck out five in a complete-game victory in the first game of the doubleheader at St. Francis.

Kirk Fellows was four for four and drove in four runs for Alemany (6-9) in the second game.

Paraclete 8, Harvard 5--Jeff Williams was three for four to lead visiting Paraclete (2-7). Jono Pivo drove in two runs for Harvard.

Agoura 13-5, Santa Paula 2-6--The Chargers (3-7) had 25 hits in a doubleheader against visiting Santa Paula, but settled for a split. Agoura’s Sean Fitzgerald and Jason Warren each went three for four in the first game. In the second game, Ed Gillis had three hits.

Crespi 4, Loyola 3--Philip Aghajanian allowed only one hit over four innings but teammate Ryan Staley (1-2) picked up his first win for host Crespi. John Peck hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to give Crespi (8-6) a 3-2 lead.
