In other baseball games:

Rio Mesa 14, Buena 5--It’s difficult for Rio Mesa Coach Rich Duran to determine where Mike Mitchell is most effective. “Michael can go in and pitch a complete game or you can put him in and he’ll hit the ball,” Duran said.

Mitchell did both in the Channel League game at Rio Mesa. The 6-4, 190-pound senior had three hits, including a two-run double during a five-run second inning that helped overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Mitchell (3-0), who started at first base, came on in relief of starter Frank Tinoco in the second and went the rest of the way to pick up the victory.

“I’m a two-inning relief kind of guy,” said Mitchell, who threw 75 pitches in 5 2/3 innings. “This was the longest I’ve ever had to go. (Duran) said he would keep me in for as long as it took us to take a comfortable lead.”

It didn’t take long. Rio Mesa (11-2, 5-0) added five runs in the third, four coming on a grand slam by Jon McMullen, the son of former major leaguer Ken McMullen, to take a 12-3 lead.

McMullen, Dmitri Young, and Hernan Martinez each had two hits to pace a 14-hit attack. Art Gonzales was three for four for Buena (5-5, 3-2).
