Skip Adams, who guided the Antelope Valley High basketball team to two Golden League championships in his five-year tenure, has resigned as coach. No replacement has been named.

Adams, 43, said that he is resigning both to pursue his certificate in educational administration and because he “needs a break from basketball.”

“I don’t want to say I’m burned out,” Adams said. “That’s the wrong choice of words because I’m not dead yet.

“You may see me somewhere down the road. I may coach basketball in the near future.”

Adams, who turned in his letter of resignation Thursday, said he would continue teaching physical education at the school.

The 1966 Antelope Valley High graduate played on the last Antelope Valley basketball team to reach the Southern Section championship game and returned to the Antelope Valley gym in 1986 after assistant coaching stints at Texas and New Mexico State.

He compiled an overall record of 70-52, although this year’s team slipped to an 11-15 record and lost in the first round of the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs to Lakewood.

In 1990, the Antelopes were 21-6 and won the Golden League championship behind forward Chris Walters, now at Texas El Paso.

A school spokesman said the search for a new coach would begin immediately.

Adams’ resignation leaves two coaching openings in the Golden League. Quartz Hill’s Don Moore resigned at the end of the season.

Moore’s replacement--Quartz Hill assistant coach Steve Hurst is the probable choice--is expected to be named soon.
