BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Highland Hall Ties State Win Mark

Highland Hall High defeated Hillcrest Christian, 18-3, in a Westside League game Tuesday at North Valley Colt Field, tying a state record with its 35th consecutive league victory.

The Hawks (8-5, 3-0 in league play) share the Southern Section record with St. Bernard, which won 35 consecutive league games in 1986-89, and will attempt to break the mark Tuesday against South Bay Lutheran.

Highland Hall right-hander Jakob Jensen threw a two-hitter and struck out 14 batters--including 10 in a row at one stretch--and also went four for four.

Jensen’s fourth hit set the Southern Section career mark for hits with 148. Dmitri Young of Rio Mesa also notched his 148th hit Tuesday. Jensen, a senior, has 16 hits in his past 17 at-bats.

In other high school games:

Poly 11, Monroe 3--Robert Iglesias, promoted from the junior varsity last week, was three for three to lead Poly in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Jesus Perez, who has 10 hits in his past 16 at-bats, added two hits for Poly.

Granada Hills 3, Reseda 2 (eight innings)--Robert Fowble homered on the first pitch of the eighth inning to give the Highlanders a Northwest Valley Conference win.

Saugus 4, Burroughs (R) 2--Chris Hernandez went the distance in a Golden League game that kept the host Centurions (10-5, 6-2) atop the league standings.

Palmdale 12, Quartz Hill 6--Dan Salazar was three for three with five runs batted in and threw an eight-hitter for visiting Palmdale in a Golden League game.

Antelope Valley 8, Canyon 7--Peter Holt of Antelope Valley had a two-run double in the fourth that broke a 4-4 tie in a Golden League game at Canyon.

Grant 7, Van Nuys 1--Peter Chong had three hits to lead Grant (7-8, 5-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home. Jason Litt (2-2) and Ryan Messervier combined on a two-hitter for Grant.

Buena 8, Santa Barbara 7 (eight innings)--Chuck Mullaney’s RBI-double in the eighth inning gave Buena (7-5, 5-2) a Channel League win. Chris Denger hit a two-run home run for Buena.

Hueneme 7, San Marcos 2--Jose Reyes’ two-run home run led Hueneme (11-4, 4-3) to its fifth consecutive victory in a Channel League game at San Marcos.

Oxnard 4, Dos Pueblos 2--Steve Meek hit three doubles and Mike Mendoza allowed only three hits to lead host Oxnard (7-8, 3-4) in a Channel League game.

Montclair Prep 14, Village Christian 0--Andy Shaw was four for four, including a home run, to lead host Montclair Prep (11-3, 4-0) in an Alpha League game.

COLLEGE

Cal Lutheran 18, Occidental 1--Blake Babki and Dan Weis each homered during a six-run outburst in the first inning for host Cal Lutheran (21-6), which won its ninth consecutive game.

Moorpark 1, Canyons 0--Del Marine scored on Brandon Banaga’s infield ground ball with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give Moorpark (13-20, 5-10) the Western State Conference victory.

Pierce 10, Santa Barbara 0--Travis Arsenault (6-3), a sophomore left-hander, allowed only five hits in a WSC win.

Glendale 10, Valley 1--Swain Wukelich hit a three-run home run for Glendale (16-15, 8-7) in a WSC game.

Mission 6, East Los Angeles 5--Richard Ortiz drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth for Mission (16-16, 5-8) in the Southern California Athletic Conference game.
