Meek, Parks Might Join S.D. Select Team

Before 6-foot-10 Erik Meek and 6-11 Cherokee Parks team up next season at Duke University, the pair of Parade All-Americans might team up in an effort to beat the Soviet National Junior Team.

Parade’s player of the year, Michigan-bound Chris Webber of Detroit, might join as well.

The occasion is the May 17 San Diego Sports Arena stop of the AAU/Soviet Junior Boys’ Basketball Tour.

Michael Brunker, the San Diego Police Athletic League director who will coach the San Diego Select team that will play the Soviet National Junior Team, said he had been given approval to invite a couple of players from outside San Diego County to play in the game.

Parks, The Times’ Southern California player of the year from Marina High, and Webber are considering playing for the Select. Meek, The Times’ San Diego County player of the year, already has committed.

Other San Diego players are expected to be named later this week after Wednesday’s final tryout at El Camino High School.

“If we can land (Parks and Webber) that would give us a tremendous lineup,” Brunker said.

The AAU/Soviet event, of which proceeds will go to PAL, does not infringe upon the limit of two postseason all-star games for high school seniors.

Two year ago, the Soviets defeated San Diego Select--then led by Christian’s Tony Clark (Arizona/SDSU), Monte Vista’s Joe McNaull (SDSU), Lincoln’s Aaron Wilhite (Cal State Fullerton) and Torrey Pines’ Kevin Flanagan (Arizona)--80- 71.

The Soviet team, which serves as a primary feeder for the Soviet Union Olympic team, has five players returning from the 1989 team.

San Diego, which was not a part of the 1990 AAU/Soviet tour, is the fifth of 10 stops this spring and the only one in California.
