Cal Lutheran’s Clark Pitches No-Hitter, 10-0

Share

Senior right-hander Mike Clark had the right stuff for Cal Lutheran on Friday and it paid off with a 10-0 no-hitter over visiting Pomona-Pitzer in a nonconference college baseball game.

Clark (6-2) allowed only five runners to reach base and managed to overcome three Kingsmen errors in throwing his second shutout of the season.

“Obviously, it was one of his best performances since he’s been at Cal Lutheran,” said CLU Coach Rich Hill, who estimated Clark’s pitch count at 80 to 85. “Everything was at the knees. He had great command of his slider. . . . He was dominating.

“There was maybe one line drive and a couple (of) well-hit ground balls, but that was it, no deep fly balls.”

Clark, who also played for Pierce College, has won 20 games in 2 1/2 seasons at Cal Lutheran.

The closest Pomona-Pitzer got to a hit was a sinking line drive that right fielder Bob Farber grabbed with a sliding catch in the sixth inning.

Clark’s effort overshadowed another strong performance by the Cal Lutheran offense, which has pounded its way to 11 consecutive wins and 15 victories in 16 games since March 16.

Cal Lutheran scored four runs in the first inning, added one in the fourth and two in the sixth before turning up the power in the eighth when Dan Weis and Dave Leonhardt hit back-to-back home runs.

Jay Lucas, Pete Washington and Farber each had three hits.

The Kingsmen (23-6) have scored 10 or more runs in their past eight games.

* CLARK’S REPRIEVE

Apparently out of eligibility after last season, Clark petitioned two of college sports’ ruling bodies for an extra year . . . and won because his freshman season was shortened by injury. C15
