Athletes in 5 Sports Sign to Play for CS Northridge

Athletes in five sports signed letters of intent Friday to attend Cal State Northridge:

* In men’s basketball, junior college transfers James Morris and John Moses.

Morris, 24, is a 5-foot-8 point guard from Imperial Valley College; Moses, 20, is a 6-6 forward from Mt. San Antonio.

Morris, an All-State selection last season, averaged 18 points and helped Imperial Valley to a 29-4 record. Moses averaged 15.8 points and 7.0 rebounds.

* In baseball, sophomore pitcher Kevin Kloek of Citrus College.

Kloek, who is 5-0 for Citrus with an earned-run average under 2.00, chose Northridge over UC Santa Barbara and the University of the Pacific, both of which offered him four-year scholarships.

“I liked Northridge’s program. I talked with the players and they seem to enjoy playing there,” said Kloek, 20, who was 4-3 last year for Citrus. “They’re on the way up.”

* In softball, Toni Goforth, a 5-foot-6 right-hander from Righetti High in Santa Maria. Goforth was recruited as a pitcher and utility player.

* In track and field, Michael Smith. He is a transfer from San Francisco Junior College who has a personal best of 1 minute 53.78 seconds in the 800 meters.

* In men’s volleyball, Peter Piexoto, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Soquel High in Santa Cruz, signed on a partial scholarship.

Piexoto was chosen most valuable player in the Santa Cruz County Volleyball League.

The Master’s College has signed three men’s basketball recruits. Phil Sanson (6-6) averaged 12.8 points for Lincoln Land (Ill.) College last season. Doug Leaman is a 6-2 guard from Tacoma Baptist High.

Flathead (Mont.) High’s Travis Pine (6-8) signed with Master’s in the fall.

The Greater San Fernando Valley All-Star High School Basketball Classic will be played at Pierce College tonight. The girls’ game will start at 6, followed by the boys’ game at 8.

The teams are made up of City and Southern section players from the San Fernando and surrounding valleys.

Evy Wild of Hart High has signed a letter of intent to swim for Pepperdine. Wild was a junior national finalist in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
