TRACK ROUNDUP : Hancock Edges Salinas, but Saddleback Wins

Mike Hancock of Newport Harbor edged Eddie Salinas of Saddleback in the 1,600 meters and also beat Salinas in the 800, but Saddleback won a Sea View League boys’ track and field meet, 105-31, Thursday at Saddleback.

Hancock won the 1,600 in 4 minutes 35.2 seconds, just ahead of Salinas (4:35.3). Salinas wasn’t as close in the 800, finishing in 2:03.3 to Hancock’s 2:00.8.

Salinas won the 3,200 (9:51.6) and Anthoni Davis won the 200 (22.9) and the 400 (50.6) for the Roadrunners.

Modesto Tavares won the discus in 155-6, leading a Saddleback sweep of the top three places in the event.

Tony Mancuso won the shot with a put of 53 feet 8 inches for the Sailors.

In another Sea View League boys’ track and field meet:

Corona del Mar 73, University 63--Keith Miller pole vaulted 13-6 for the Sea Kings.

In Garden Grove League track and field:

Los Amigos 81, La Quinta 31--Jessie Fausto won the 440 for Los Amigos (5-2).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field:

Estancia 83, Costa Mesa 44--Kristin Hurtt broke the Estancia triple jump record, winning the event in 34-7 as the Eagles (4-1) finished in second heading into the league finals next week. Hurtt, who also won the 110-yard hurdles in 16.7, broke the record of 34-2 1/2 set by Wendy Feit in 1985.

In Orange League girls’ track and field:

Brea-Olinda 77, Magnolia 48--Dena Bloomfield won the 110-yard hurdles (15.1), the 330 hurdles (49.5) and the long jump (16-8) for visiting Brea-Olinda (4-1). Bloomfield, the defending league champion in the 330 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, has qualified for the league preliminaries in seven events and was undefeated in the hurdles and long jump in dual meets this season.

In Orange League boys’ track and field:

Brea-Olinda 77, Magnolia 49--Matt Savala won the 220-yard run (23.2) and the high jump (6-2) for Brea-Olinda (3-2).

In Olympic League boys’ track and field:

Orange Lutheran 93, Valley Christian 40--Jim Meyer won the 200 (24.61) and was on the winning 1,600 (3:42) and 400 (47.1) relay teams as Orange Lutheran (6-1) remained in a first-place tie with Ayala and Whittier Christian going into next week’s league finals. The Lancers also defeated Whitney, 101-30, in the double dual meet at Valley Christian.

In Olympic League girls’ track and field:

Orange Lutheran 89, Valley Christian 32--Kara Stephens won the discus in 110-8 1/2 for Orange Lutheran. The Lancers also defeated Whitney, 110-7, and finished the regular league season 7-0 and in first place.
