SPORTSCOPE : Field Complete for Loyola Tournament

Loyola Marymount, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Sports Council, will play host to the L.A. Classic Basketball Invitational Nov. 22-23.

Besides Loyola, Washington State, Morgan State and Central Connecticut will compete in the tournament. Loyola has also agreed to play host to the event in 1992.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund literacy programs, according to Junior Chamber President John Paulson. Information: (213) 482-1311.

Pat Powers of San Diego and Adam Johnson of Capistrano Beach defeated Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos of Pacific Palisades, 15-11, to win the pro beach volleyball event last weekend at Santa Barbara.

Powers and Johnson each earned $6,825 and Smith and Stoklos $4,225.

On the women’s tour, Linda Carrillo of Van Nuys and Nina Matthies of Malibu defeated Janice Harret of Honolulu and Elaine Roque of Malibu, 7-4, in a tiebreaker at Clearwater, Fla.

Carrillo and Matthies earned $4,800 and Harret and Roque $3,600.

The men’s tour stops in Clearwater this week for a $100,000 event. The women will compete in Fresno.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will play host to its annual All Sports Banquet and Awards Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on May 14 in the Grand Ballroom of the Holiday Inn-Torrance Gateway.

Cost is $25 for the general public and $20 for Toro Athletic Associates. Reservations must be made by May 7. Information: (213) 516-3523.
