Tes Whitlock and Tracy Titus of Loara High School, the two most prolific single-game scorers in county history, will take their curtain calls today in the Orange County all-star basketball games at Saddleback College.

Whitlock, who scored a county-record 68 points against Saddleback, will lead the North team in the 26th annual boys’ game at 4 p.m. Titus, who nearly matched Whitlock with a 61-point performance against Los Alamitos, will lead the North in the 14th annual girls’ game at 1:30.

Whitlock broke a county mark that had stood for 80 years when he scored 68 points in a 10 a.m. game against Saddleback in the Irvine World News Tournament, so a matinee game should be no problem for the senior guard who has signed with Arizona State.

Whitlock has dazzled North teammates with his three-point shooting skills, displaying an impressive shooting range. But another North player, unheralded forward Ruben Oronoz of Whittier Christian, has been equally impressive in six practices under Servite Coach Richard Smith.

“Ruben was the 11th player chosen (out of 15) the first day we picked sides for a game, and ever since, he’s been the first player picked,” Smith said. “I can’t believe he hasn’t been offered a scholarship.”

Joining Whitlock in the backcourt will be Western’s Tom Barraza, who Smith said has been the hardest worker in camp. Center Jason Janeski and forward Joe Foss of Esperanza also will start for the North.

South Coach Tom McCluskey of Tustin will start two of the players who led Tustin to a 30-4 record and the State Division II championship in Oakland last month.

Guard David Beilstein and forward Thomas Clayton were the key figures in Tustin’s drive to the State title that climaxed with a 66-54 victory over Danville San Ramon Valley. Beilstein, an uncanny guard, will start at the point.

Joining Beilstein in the backcourt will be Laguna Beach’s Josh Borella, the biggest surprise in the South camp, according to McCluskey. Center Brett McCorkle of Capistrano Valley and forward John Molle of Irvine also will start. Molle, who averaged 28.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, is the South’s best player.

The South will have a decided height advantage and more marquee players but its biggest star, All-American center Cherokee Parks of Marina, cannot participate under Southern Section rules after playing in all-star games in Washington, D.C., and Springfield, Mass.

In the girls’ game, the North team will have the height advantage, with 6-foot-2 Titus and 6-0 Leslie Ferguson of La Habra teamed.

Titus, who has narrowed her college choices to USC and Nevada Las Vegas, averaged 25.5 points and 26.4 rebounds per game. She was named The Times’ county player of the year after scoring 1,015 points during her three-year career.

South Coach Lisa McNamee of Estancia hopes to counter the North’s height with a full-court press.

“We are fired up. We are ready to play,” McNamee said. “Our transition game is looking very good. We are going to press the entire game. If we get any kind of a lead, we’ll substitute in bulk.”

North Coach Denise Selbe, who gave birth to her first child April 2, will be assisted by her husband, John, who said that developing team chemistry has been their top priority.

“They (the girls) are all working hard and trying to get some continuity because they don’t know each other well,” Selbe said.
