Satterfield, Dalton Choose Portland to Play Basketball

Uba Satterfield and Jerry Dalton of Ventura College have committed to play basketball for the University of Portland, Ventura Coach Phil Mathews said Tuesday.

Mathews said that both players were waiting for their fathers to sign the letters of intent before returning them. Satterfield, a 6-foot-3 swingman from Kennedy High, also visited Cal State Northridge and Cal State Long Beach. He was Ventura’s second-leading scorer and rebounder with 15.7 points and 6.4 rebounds a game.

Dalton, a 6-1 sophomore from Perris High, averaged 9.2 points and 3.9 assists. He visited Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield.

Brian Capella, a Times All-Ventura County off-guard from Thousand Oaks High, has made a commitment to play basketball at UC San Diego.

Capella (6-4) led Thousand Oaks in assists and steals and was the team’s second-leading scorer.

UC San Diego is an NCAA Division III power that finished with a 23-4 record last season.

Mary Moore, a right-handed pitcher from Sacramento City College, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Cal State Northridge.

Moore had a 23-4 record last season and was an all-state selection.

Pierce College will play host to the junior college state volleyball championships Friday and Saturday. Semifinal games will be played Friday. Long Beach City and De Anza will play at 5 p.m., followed by Orange Coast College and Santa Barbara at 7:30.

Madga Muchnik of the Glendale Swim Club has qualified for the national age-group championships for synchronized swimming. Muchnik placed fourth in the 15-16 age-group solo event in the Western Zone Section C age-group championships April 7 in Chula Vista.

The North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village will play host to the sixth Nutrasweet Classic benefitting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation on Monday.

Nearly 250 area residents and business leaders are scheduled to participate.

Harvard Water Polo Foundation will attempt to earn its fourth consecutive men’s water polo title in the men’s outdoor nationals Friday through Sunday at Long Beach State. Harvard will defend its title against 11 club teams.
