Esperanza’s dominance in the field events led to a runaway victory in the Empire League boys’ track and field championships Thursday at Rancho Santiago College.

Mark Parlin led the way with meet records in the discus (174 feet 9 1/2 inches) and shotput (63- 1/4), breaking his own marks. The Aztecs easily outdistanced the field in team totals with 182 points to 88 for runner-up Katella. Esperanza pole vaulter Trevor Lycett also broke his mark with a 14-9 1/4 vault.

Esperanza’s Roshawn Sims barely missed breaking his record of 48.44 seconds in the 400 meters but still won handily in 48.52. Katella’s Kevin Carlson prevented an Esperanza sweep of the field events with a leap of 6-10 in the high jump, tying the record of Los Alamitos’ Brad Harris in 1976. Cypress’ Jeff Waldron was second at 6-9. Carlson attempted 7- 1/2 to better his county record of 7 feet but just missed on his final attempt.

Los Alamitos edged Katella for the girls’ championship, led by Carreta Mitchell’s victories in the 100 and 200 meters and Jenny Reyes’ victories in the long jump (15-7) and triple jump (33-8 1/4). Katella’s Martha Pinto nipped Los Alamitos’ Tracy Fatone to win the 1,600 meters in 5:28.09 and outdistanced the field in the 3,200 meters in 11:26.55. Fatone won the 800 in 2:18.59.

Los Alamitos finished with 156 points to Katella’s 111.
