PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE : Estancia Upends Laguna Hills to Take Boys’ and Girls’ Titles

Share

Estancia took both the boys’ and girls’ titles in the Pacific Coast League championships Friday at Saddleback College.

Laguna Hills boys’ and girls’ teams were each 5-0 in dual meets coming into the championships. But David Childs, the Hawks’ top sprinter who qualified for the Southern Section finals in the 200 as a junior, pulled a hamstring earlier in the season and was unable to compete.

The Estancia boys had not won the title since 1980. The girls had been shut out since 1979, when they competed in the Century League.

“We hadn’t won a dual track meet in four years (before this season),” boys’ Coach Jim Selby said. “And our record was 4-1 coming in and we both (boys’ and girls’ teams) won the championships. What else can you say?”

Four league records were set in Friday night’s meet.

Estancia’s Bill Sandro finished in 10.81 seconds in the 100 meters and broke the 11-second mark set by Mike Allison in 1989 and Frank Smith in 1990.

Tenaya Johnson won the girls’ 100 with a 12.40, breaking the record of 12.6 set by Michelle Muniz in both 1989 and 1990.

Darci Morrison jumped four inches better than her previous mark, shared by Gina Krouse in 1987 and 1989, with 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump. Estancia’s Christa Van Doorn and Nicole Oberreuter had discus throws of 115-4 1/2 and 107-2, respectively, besting Katy Jaglowski’s mark of 100-1.
