HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP : Rio Mesa’s Jones, Burnham Dominate Channel League Meet

Marion Jones and Alycia Burnham of Rio Mesa High each won three individual events, and both contributed legs to a victorious 400-meter relay effort as the Spartans began their quest for a second consecutive Southern Section 3-A Division title in the Channel League finals at Santa Barbara City College on Friday.

Jones, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, won the 100 in 11.5 seconds, the 200 in 22.9, the 400 in 55.5, and anchored the Spartans’ 400 relay to victory in 48.6.

Burnham ran the second leg on the 400 relay and took the 100 low hurdles in 15.2, the 300 low hurdles in 46.4 and the long jump at 17 feet 9 inches.

Oxnard freshman Gabriela Rodriguez was a double winner in the 1,600 (5 minutes 22.0 seconds) and the 3,200 (11:18.8).

Zolly Terry of Hueneme was the only double winner in the boys’ meet, running 11.0 in the 100 and 22.2 in the 200.

Rio Mesa’s Patrick Van Scoy won the shotput at 53-10 3/4 and Ventura’s Brian Righetti won the discus with a throw of 162-5.

FOOTHILL LEAGUE FINALS

Billy Dixon and Tim DeGroote led Hart to the team title in the boys’ meet at College of the Canyons as the Indians totaled 138 1/2 points to runner-up Schurr’s 123.

Dixon won the 1,600 meters in 4:22.1 and placed second in the 3,200 in 9:44.9; DeGroote threw 145-2 to win the discus and finished third in the shotput at 46-2.

Other winners included Rafael De La Cruz of Burroughs in the 100 (11.2) and 200 (22.9), and J. J. Houle of Burbank in the 800 (2:00.0).

Bonnie Lucas of Burroughs won the 100 (16.1) and 300 (49.6) low hurdles in the girls’ meet as Schurr defeated Hart, 121-99, for the title.

SAN FERNANDO LEAGUE FINALS

Harvard, led by sprinter Stafford Lee, won 10 of 16 boys’ events in the meet at Harvard High.

Lee led Harvard to 1-2-3 finishes in the 100 and 200 meters with victories in 10.7 and 22.3.

Bill Stinehart, Jesse Stern and Iheanyi Uwaezuoke also won events for Harvard.

Stinehart, a sophomore, ran 2:00.1 in the 800, Stern cleared 13-0 in the pole vault, and Uwaezuoke bounded 44-3 in the triple jump.

FRONTIER LEAGUE FINALS

Nikki Shaw of Fillmore won three events in the girls’ meet, and Fillmore’s Jorge Barajas and Santa Clara’s Mark Aucutt posted double wins in the boys’ meet at Nordhoff.

Shaw, seventh in the 800 meters in last year’s state championships, won the 440 yards in 1:00.7, the 880 in 2:21.7, and the mile in 5:10.7.

Barajas took the boys’ mile in 4:35.6 and the two-mile race in 9:54.8.

Aucutt ran 15.2 in the 120-yard high hurdles and leaped 21-0 in the long jump.
