True, the ‘70s Were Tacky--but Also Fun

Share

Your articles, “Boogieing on Back to ‘70s” and “The Disco Devotee of the Decade” (April 26) made me feel that it is OK to come clean: I was a disco fan once. (Why do I keep thinking that someone is going to form “Disco-Lovers Anonymous”?)

I felt the full brunt of the disco backlash. I was criticized relentlessly for liking that music. Since then, I have seen people embrace fads, reject them, and go right back to them. It has left me with some pretty irreverent attitudes, a bemusement, you might say, about music.

I have a theory about why the ‘70s have suddenly become “hip” again. It’s a backlash against the ‘60s revival. The self-righteousness of the hippies-turned-yuppies has become very annoying.

The ‘70s craze seems to be devoid of all that self-righteousness. It’s a joke. It’s funny. Despite all the tackiness, the ridiculousness of it all, it’s easier to take than a bunch of people saying that you have to like Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead--or else .
