School: El Modena High

Sport: Track and field

Events: 880, 440 and 220 yards

Class: Senior

A strategy suited more for energy conservation than fast times has again worked well for Terry. Terry, who hasn’t lost a Century League race in the past two seasons, won the 220-, 440- and 880-yard races in league finals for the third consecutive year. In the half mile, the race he has won at the past two Division 3-A championships and will run at UCLA, Terry ran as slow as he could--and still win--in order to save energy for the shorter events. The well-rested Terry won each of the events with times (220, 22.3 seconds; 440 49.2) that equalled or broke school records that he held. He then made up 20 yards on the anchor lap of the mile relay, leading his team to victory in 3:31.5 and giving the Vanguards their third consecutive league title.

Other top performers:

Mark Hansen, who was named the Century League swimmer of the year after winning the 50-yard freestyle (22.14), the 500 freestyle (4:51.05) and swimming on the winning medley relay (1:41.52) and freestyle relay (3:18.26) teams.

Phillip Lim, who swept his singles sets as La Quinta won its 35th and 36th consecutive Garden Grove League tennis matches. Against Kennedy, Lim, who won all 36 of his matches in league, only lost four points in three 6-0 victories, including one set in which he didn’t lose a point.

Tony Martinez, who had six hits in eight at-bats--including a home run and two triples--and drove in nine runs as Sunny Hills beat second-place La Habra twice to clinch first-place in the Freeway League.

Matt Taylor, who had 42 kills as the Huntington Beach volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, rallied for a five-game victory over Marina to clinch the Sunset League title.
