Shannon Miller, Sandy Woolsey and Dominique Dawes are a few of the top senior gymnasts in the country who will begin competing today at the women’s U.S. Gymnastics Classic at Marina High School in Huntington Beach. The top 18 will advance to the U.S. National Championships next month in Cincinnati.

The two-day competition is divided into two sessions daily. Compulsory exercise competition will be held today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and optional competition will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The compulsory score counts 60% and the optional 40% toward a combined score that will also determine the all-around champion.

The junior division concluded its two-day meet Friday night.

Some of the other top gymnasts expected are Kim Kelly, Wendy Bruce, Elisabeth Crandall, Jennifer Mercier, Juliet Bangerter, Stephanie Woods and Shelley Engel.
