For the third time in their high school careers, Phung Hua and Linh Truong were winners.
The Hoover High seniors won their third consecutive San Diego Section girls’ badminton doubles championship, winning the title Thursday at the Federal Building.
Hua and Truong, the top-seeded team in the county, scored a decisive 15-6, 15-7 victory over Morse’s sister duo, third-seeded Rattan and Souphaly Vongsaenkeo.
There’s a good reason Hua and Truong won the doubles title--they also competed against each other for the singles championship. Second-seeded Hua scored an 11-6, 11-9 decision over her third-seeded teammate.
San Diego sophomore Somsack Monsavath, who lost in the finals last year, defeated senior Tho Thai of Crawford, 5-2, 15-7, to claim the boys’ singles title.
Monsavath and Sombath Vilitchai won the mixed doubles title, 15-4, 15-7, beating Crawford’s Dat Nguyen and Jennie Le.
Hoover’s Le Huynh and Thinh Nguyen won the boys doubles, 15-4, 15-9, beating Crawford’s Neam Tang and Tao Ho.
