L.A. Soccer League Championship Starts Today

The Greater Los Angeles Soccer League’s season ends this weekend with the championship finals between Yugoslav Airlines and Inter Los Angeles at 8 p.m. today and 3 p.m. Saturday at Daniels Field in San Pedro. Total goals will determine the champion.

If necessary, the winner of the series will be determined by penalty kicks.

The same teams tied in their two previous meetings. Inter L.A. was the only team in the league not to be beaten by Yugoslav Airlines.

Redondo Beach native Mike Gonzales, who first earned international recognition by winning the decathlon gold medal in the 1987 Pan American Games, will be presented with the Latino Olympic Athlete of the Year Award today at by the Hispanic Public Relations Assn. of Los Angeles.

The former Bishop Montgomery High and USC decathlete, one of eight Latino athletes from a variety of sports to be honored by the Hispanic organization, is currently training to qualify for the 1992 Olympic decathlon competition at Barcelona.

The 27-year-old Gonzales hasn’t competed in international competition for two years because of an Achilles’ tendon injury. His most recent international success was winning the gold medal in a 10-event competition in the 1988 USA-Canada dual meet.

The second annual Jerry Buss Celebrity Golf Invitational to benefit Love is Feeding Everyone (LIFE) will be held Monday at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

The day-long event begins with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., followed by cocktails and a silent auction at 5 and dinner and awards at 6:30. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Participation is $375 per person, or $50 for the banquet only. Information: (213) 936-0895.

The Manhattan Beach Hurricane, boys under-17 soccer club, is holding tryouts Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Manhattan Village field. Boys born between Aug. 1, 1974 and July 31, 1975, are eligible. Information: (213) 318-5094.

Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock won their sixth women’s professional volleyball tour event of the season last weekend in Salt Lake City.

Kirby and Rock defeated Linda Carrillo and Liz Masakayan, 15-10, in the final.

The men’s tour event in Arlington, Tex., was rained out.

The women’s tour is in Reno this weekend and the men will compete in San Antonio.
