Arreola Wins 1,500 at NCAA Meet

Former Grossmont High runner Darcy Arreola was the winner of the women’s 1,500 meters Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon.

Arreola, competing for Cal State Northridge, clocked 4 minutes, 11.46 seconds, beating Tennessee’s Jasmin Jones, who clocked 4:14.87.

Arreola was the San Diego Section’s track athlete of the year in 1986 and won the section 1,600-meter title in 1985-86. She was the 800 champion in 1984

SOCCER

Eric Wynalda scored the tying goal in the 68th minute and the United States national soccer team tied Ireland, 1-1, in Foxboro, Mass.

Sockers’ player Brian Quinn, who played midfield for the U.S., is a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has lived in the U.S. since 1981 and received his American citizenship two weeks ago. It was his first international appearance.

CHARITY BASKETBALL

San Diego Charger players and the San Diego news media compete in a benefit basketball game on Saturday for the five members of the Christina Adams family.

Adams, 18, a senior at Granite Hills and member of The Times All-County team, earned a basketball scholarship to UC Irvine. She, along with her four younger sisters ranging down to four-year-old twins, were left without parents after a murder-suicide earlier this year.

Among the Chargers to compete are Billy Joe Tolliver, Lee Williams, Leslie O’Neal, Ronnie Harmon, Burt Grossman, Courtney Hall, John Friesz, John Kidd, John Carney, Eric Floyd, Steve Hendrickson and Eric Bieniemy.

Media members include Stephen Clark, Jim Stone, Hank Bauer, Rod Luck, Lee Hamilton, Brad Cesmat, Randy Hahn, Cookie (Chainsaw) Randolph, T.J. Simers, Clark Judge, Jim Trotter, Tom Krasovic and Gary Hyvonen.

Tolliver and Grossman have pledged $10 per point for the Chargers’ score and the player who scores the fewest points between them will donate an additional $500.

Dozens of raffle prizes have been donated. All proceeds will be placed in a Bank of America fund solely for the children’s benefit.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
