Rich Montanio, the baseball coach at Canyon High the past four seasons, resigned his position last week to pursue a master’s degree in education.

Montanio, 42, who compiled a 40-49-1 record (27-33 in Golden League play) at Canyon, will continue to teach physical education at the school.

“This was too good an opportunity to pass up,” Montanio said of the master’s program, which will be held at Canyon High and administered through Azusa Pacific University.

After finishing second in the Golden League in 1989, Canyon struggled the past two seasons, placing fourth in 1990 and fifth this year.

The Cowboys (11-11-1, 6-9) were in contention for the league title with two weeks left in the regular season but lost their last four games.

Canyon Principal Bill White said a search for Montanio’s successor probably will start next week.
