Basketball Coach Pete Cassidy was one of five Cal State Northridge coaches whose contracts have been extended, CSUN Athletic Director Bob Hiegert announced Wednesday.

Cassidy, whose previous contract was for three years, was given a two-year contract. He led Northridge to a 7-12 record in 1990-91 before being sidelined for the last nine games of the season because of an intestinal disorder. The Matadors finished their inaugural NCAA Division I season with an 8-20 mark.

Asked if there was any significance to the fact that Cassidy was given a contract of a shorter duration than his previous one, Hiegert said: “The significance is that he has a multi-year contract.”

Cassidy, who is 74-88 over the past six seasons and 290-245 in his 20-year career, refused Wednesday to comment on his contract. He said last week that he expected to receive a three-year deal.

Football Coach Bob Burt was given a two-year contract that will run until 1993 when the program will be in some phase of Division I play. Recent NCAA legislation requires each school’s athletic teams to play in the same division.

Swimming Coach Pete Accardy received a three-year contract. Accardy, the men’s and women’s coach, is on a 10-month, academic-year appointment.

Women’s basketball Coach Janet Martin received a one-year contract. Men’s soccer Coach Marwan Ass’ad, who is part time, also received a one-year contract.

Previously, women’s volleyball Coach Walt Ker received a three-year contract.

Contracts of those who coach spring sports will not be announced until July 1.
